It all started when…
My mother gave me a Kodak Instamatic when, at age 10, I was leaving Harlingen, Texas to visit my father and his new family in New Jersey, As the airport gate agent placed the ‘Child Traveling Alone’ ID and lanyard around my neck, my mother instructed me to take pictures to share with my four younger sisters. Immediately upon take off I began snapping pictures of what I thought were beautiful cloud formations outside the airplane. By the time we landed in Newark, NJ, after a layover in Dallas, I shot all four cartridges and was sure my mother would be impressed with my eye for images. Money was tight as we were just coming off of a year of being homeless, so she was not happy paying for four cartridges of clouds! Fortunately, this became an oft told and laughed at family story.
This is still reflective of my photographic style. I want my images to spark curiosity and wonder. What is that lion thinking? What is going on in the mind of the airport roof cleaner’s mind? Where is that woman heading?
I live by the values of simplicity, curiosity and creativity and I hope my images reflect these.
